Chapter 15

So, are you in love?”

Chloe raised an eyebrow at Gaby. She and her two friends were enjoying the blueberry crumb cake Chloe made and the mid-morning air on their deck as Chloe recounted yesterday’s romantic date at the ranch for “Sunday morning story hour.” Gaby and Jess sat quietly with their chins propped on their hands and their eyes wide. They didn’t interrupt once, only letting out murmurs of jealousy and awes.

Chloe had given this exact question a lot of thought the night before. And the answer was clear. Leaning toward her friends and bringing her voice to a whisper, she said, “I think so!”

“I knew it!” Gaby pumped the air with her arm.

Chloe buried her cheeks in her hands. “I can’t believe I just said that! Do you think it’s too soon?”

Jess patted her arm. “It’s how you feel. Trust yourself, Chloe. More importantly, don’t overthink this.”

“I’ll try not to. I promise.” Chloe patted both on the shoulders. Then she sighed. “Not trying to change the subject, because I have loved telling you about yesterday, but I have something I want to talk to you about. There’s something that I haven’t always been so open about with you both and it’s been nagging at me lately.”

Gaby and Jess exchanged a look. “Spill, girl,” Gaby encouraged.

Chloe took a breath and steadied herself. You can do it. “It’s not something that happened to me. It’s more about who I am.”

“Okay,” said Jess, leaning forward.

Chloe shook her head. “Hearing me say that makes it sound like I’ve been living a lie. It’s not like that. Maybe a better way of putting it is: what I am capable of.”

Teetering on the edge of suspense, Jess blurted out, “Out with it already!”

“Sorry, sorry,” Chloe said as she swept her hand through the air. “Before the accident, I used to have a very keen sense of intuition. Sometimes actual premonitions.” Chloe looked into her friends’ eyes. Please don’t think I’m weird. But only confusion and shock registered there. “I’m sorry I never told you. Please don’t hate me!”

Gaby moved her chair closer. “We could never hate you, Chloe. We love you. Please tell us more.”

“Yeah,” urged Jess.

“Well, I don’t know if you really call it premonitions. I sometimes would get feelings or see visions. Other times I would have a physical reaction, like feeling pain or getting sick.” She paused. A weight felt lifted from her shoulders. I should’ve told them a long time ago. “I would just know or sense things. It could be why my dad was always angry. He and my mom knew I could do it. I learned very quickly that the more I let on that I knew something, the more trouble I would be in. I always wondered if my mom also had this ability. We both were very quiet and kept to ourselves. It seemed to be the only way to survive living with my dad.” She gave a sad smile. “Anyway, I could always sense both good and bad things.
